More on Candling Eggs

Check out this video! It shows me candling the eggs about a week into incubation. If you look closely, you should be able to see some weird-looking, red webbibng starting to develop along the membrane of the shell. In the center you should see a black dot surrounded by a reddish blob. The black dot is the eye and the reddish blob is a body starting to form. It kinda wiggles a little if you watch closely.

By the way- I forgot to tell you guys what candling is!
Candling is when you take a bright light, such as a flashlight, and shine it behind the egg. The light penetrates the shell and lets you see everything inside the egg without damage. It sort of like an x-ray or an ultrasound.

Candling Eggs

Today I candled my eggs! It's a little early to see anything, but they are definitely fertile. The reddish blobs in the middle are, believe it or not, chicks! Keep checking my blog to see more of these little guys!

Eggy Time!

The eggs are resting in the incubator ^

I went and got the eggs from Viki today! There's nine total: 6 of my own hen, Ra, and 3 from another White Crested Black Polish. The eggs are all in the incubator now and heating up. They should start hatching within 18-21 days. I can't wait!!!

(The reason I had to go to someone else's house to get my own hen's eggs is that she is staying there with her "mate," Mu. The law kicked them out of the house-- but I didn't want to kill them. So now they are staying with a friend and livin' it up!)

The Incubator is Here!

Inside the incubator
Outside the incubator
Take a look at the pics above ^

The incubator that my dad ordered last week finally came! YAY! I set it up and it is in my room on my nightstand. This way I can be close to my chickees at all times. It has a couple windows on the top so I can look at the eggs without disturbing them. We didn't order an automatic egg turner, so I will be hand-turning the eggs. The next step is to actually bring home the eggs! That will be happening on Saturday, February 21st at Viki's Ranch. I will post again that day.

Boring Stuff

Yesterday my dad ordered the incubator online from Amazon! I know, it's not that exciting, but it's still a step closer to hatching day. We ordered the GQF Hova-Bator Thermal Air Flow Egg Incubator. It should be here in about a week.
